South of France!

Mon Sep 21, 2009, 11:21 AM
Long time since I've posted on here.

Extreme university third year business miles away from any mountains has temporarily prevented any picture taking.

Soon to be rectified by a trip to Toulouse and Carcassonne. Hopefully a nice mixture of town and countryside vistas to come.

So, mainly just out of curiosity...when you say your interests include climbing. Does that mean rock climbing or is it some sort of joke about climbing to odd places to get good shots?

:iconjonathanknowles:
No no I wasn't joking. I do quite a bit of rock climbing, I'm not especially good though, there's a lot of climbing near to where I live. Lots in Scotland and the Lake District too, all good for taking photos too.

Yeah, I've been climbing for 5 years, and it is DEFINITELY my dream to come climb in the UK. I actually am going to be there next summer, maybe I'll get to climb then! I, however, have not been taking photos long, and haven't tried it on a climb yet...we'll see.

Excellent, where abouts in the UK are you going? Forgive the regional arrogance but in the North of England there's a great deal of climbing, and in the South of England there is almost none. The best area for single pitch is probably the Peak District, mile after mile of gritstone edges. Lancashire where I live (although I'm at uni in York most of the year) is pretty good too, although less inviting than the grit of the Peak District due to the fact that most of it is in quarries and the routes aren't in as good condition, and the guidebook is crap. For multi-pitch I like the Lake District best but Snowdonia in Wales is also good. The Peak District is by far the most accessible place with good climbing. Scotland is good but you need a car (you'll struggle anywhere without one to be honest) and it's a day's drive to get to anywhere good in the highlands. Other than the Cuillin I'm not well up on climbing in Scotland.

What sort of climbing do you do in the US? Everything is trad here. With a few exceptions such as Malham Cove (which is monsterly difficult) and some of the slate quarries of North Wales. You'll be pushing your baggage limit with a full trad rack I guess.

Yeah, a full trad rack WOULD be pushing it I think! I do every sort of climbing that you can imagine. I do a lot of lead climbing here, that's my favorite, but I have done a good deal of trad too. I'm not particularly fond of bouldering. I will be in basically any part of the UK that I want to be in. My employers are giving me a paid summer off to travel Europe, so I guess I can go anywhere that I want! Regional arrogance forgiven, I think we have a lot of that in the US too! Thanks for the advice though! Looks like I will have to rent a car for my climbing adventure!
